We have a vicarious thrill of some unspeakable terror, hot on our heels, and through the interface of a game, we can participate in this fear sensation. It is this thrill that makes some of us enjoy horror. What is it about these games that intrigues us so? I like to look back to a '70s movie called "Roller Coaster", where the owner of the theme park says, "People like to ride roller coasters because it gives them the fear of death, without actually having the fear of dying." (This quote is approximate, I haven't seen the film since it was released.)
